Case study:
Indigo Agricultural Microbial Technology, Ivory Coast

ECOM Agroindustrial Corp. Ltd partnered with Indigo, a company dedicated to harnessing nature to help farmers sustainably feed the planet, to trial their company’s microbial product for cotton in Ivory Coast. The growers of this region have faced increasing challenges to productivity and profitability, due to unpredictable weather, characterized by extended periods of drought and erratic rainfall.

Indigo utilizes beneficial microbes residing within plant tissues to optimize crop health and improve productivity. Indigo Cotton™ is designed to enhance water intake, with the goal of improving yields when plants are grown under water stress. The results of the Indigo trial were encouraging in Ivory Coast.

Across controlled and non-controlled fields, Indigo Cotton™ led to yield increases of 30%, as well as increased root and shoot length, greater fruit weight and earlier germination. Seeds coated with Indigo’s product outperformed not only untreated seeds, but also those treated with a standard chemical seed treatment.

The Indigo team looks forward to pursuing commercial opportunities with ECOM, bringing new technologies to the African market that will benefit growers, consumers and the environment alike. Poised to greatly improve the environmental sustainability of farming, Indigo’s microbial technology has the potential to improve water use efficiency and reduce the use of agricultural chemicals over time. On a large scale, this should lead to healthier ecosystems, cleaner food, a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and enhanced grower profitability.
